diminutive. There are numerous side chapels. Two are behind windows, with aspects of the Virgin on the back walls. Both of these seem to be in a state of repair, reconstruction, renovation, as there are workbenches tools and paints, and workman busy with projects. Much of this is inspired by and funded through the UNESCO program. Of the other remaining chapels, one is dedicated to the crucified Jesus, another is dedicated to Mary in the form of the Virgen del Rosario, the Virgin of the Rosary. On the ceiling, depicted in contrasts of varying shades of browns and blacks and some muted coloring, are the stations of the cross, the via crucis, the last hours of Jesus, from betrayal to burial, painted in a baroque style, with Mexican influence.
One of the main attractions of the Santuario, the reason that some of the people come to Atotonilco in the first place, is the statue of El Señor de la Columna, the Lord of the Column. In this instance, the column is the reference to Jesus being whipped at a post or column, as part of his punishment, on the way to being crucified. The statue is in a glass-covered case, which is niched into a space in the right hand wall. It has Jesus stripped to the waist, in a short, white cloth wrap, with gold brocade, leaning over the wooden post which is shaped much like a gourd. There is another white cloth with brocade on top of the short post. Jesus is almost an alabaster color, with brown-red paint covering his back in streaks, while other streaks of "blood" appear to be dripping down his legs. His hair and beard are jet black and there are three large gold rays protruding from his head, signifying saintly light, a corona of gold light, a saintly aura. With a smudge of red on his cheek, with his face turned three-quarters toward the viewer, Jesus' expression appears to be one of pain and withdrawal.
